New York Comic Con/Bookcon 2016 Haul

Last weekend I attended my very first Comic Con which also happened to be hosting Bookcon for their very first time. The experience is one that i’ll never forget because of how much fun I had as well as the tips & tricks I picked up along the way. As a book blogger, Bookcon was definitely a motivator in buying my tickets since let’s face it, getting physical ARCS is no easy feat for small time bloggers like myself LOL. My hubby & I purchased the 3 day passes with hopes that all would fall into place as far as sitting for our 2 tiny humans and it did *Whoop Whoop* well on day 3 we didn’t have sitting but hubby gracefully bowed out while I attended with Gretchen @Chicnerdreads who was already set to go for the day.

Day 1 was a bit on the overwhelming side since we didn’t really know what to expect tbh. It was a huge crowd & I’ve never seen so many people come together for one event but i’m glad that it was this one. Everyone for the most part was friendly which is also rare cuz hellO! it’s New York jeje! as expected we spotted tons of Jokers & Harleys, seemed to be the popular costume choice of the year. Most of the entertainment panels I was interested in, took place in the evening which meant that I missed them. I arrived at opening and left each day between 2-4pm therefore I made the showroom floor my main focus with some occasional wanderings into artist alley. Bookcon itself was held in the building across the street from the Javits Center but it mostly was for the author panels. At the end of each panel, each author would be giving away an ARC of their new book. Most ARC giveaways were held in the Javits center on the showroom floor.

Days 2 & 3 were much more successful & is when we scored most of our ARCS. Day 3 (Sunday) being the MOST EPIC because all of the publishing houses were having crazy sales & giveaways since it was the last day of Comic Con. Below is my very 1st Bookcon Haul…

    1. Thank you 😊💕I’ll definitely be treating reading & reviewing these. I’m actually going to treat them like I do my NetGalley ARCS, all have been labeled with publication dates😉 so, I’ll be reading Heartless at the end of this mth😆 excited for that one 🙂🙃🙂

      1. I’ll probably have to borrow Heartless from the library, I’m on a book buying ban! The only books that I can get are ones that I have had on pre-order for a while!

      2. Sounds like a good idea, other than Gemina I don’t have any other bookish must haves for the rest of the year. Good luck with your book buying ban 😊💕

    1. Thank you😊💕 it was my first year attending & I’m already sure that I’m going to be making this a yearly “must do”next years BEA/Bookcon will be held here in the Javits as well so I’m feeling a bit better about attending. These events get my anxiety going but I had such a great time 🙂 hope you can make the next one 💕

  2. Wow you got some amazing ARCs from Bookcon, I am so jealous and actually tempted to book a trip to New York just so I can go next year myself!
It sounds like you had a great time though, it must have been an amazing event and it seems like you got so many amazing goodies as well. I hope you enjoy all the ARCs and the other books you got, especially The Valiant because it seems like you’re really excited for that one.
I guess you’ve got a lot of reading to get done in the next few weeks! 😀

    1. Thank you Beth! I missed a few really great ones on Friday because I want hip to the social media tricks used my bookcon veterans 😂😂😂 but I scored some AMAZING ones so no complaints here. Whelp if you do make it to NY next year, let me know. I’d love to see ya at BEA 2017 at the Javits 😉 The Valiant was one of my most highly anticipated ARCS to aim for. Two days in a row I missed a surprise giveaway by 1 hour. No luck on that end but Gretchen came through & saved the day 😆😆😆 I def have a ton of reading to get done but next week it’s all about GEMINA! 💙💙💙

      1. Honestly the ones you got are amazing so I can’t imagine what ones you missed on Friday! But either way it’s great you’re happy with the ones you got, that’s the important thing. 🙂
Yeah I do want to go back to NY next year, maybe if I try and combine my trip with BEA that’s be a fun experience! ❤
That is amazing, especially if it was one you were so excited for. I only hope to book lives up to your expectations!
And yeah I hope you enjoy Gemina as well! 😀

      2. Thanks Beth, I only missed 3 that I know of: Hunted by Megan Spooner, Frostblood, & Long May She Reign. These were on the day that I went in blind not really knowing how things worked lol. Plenty of lessons were learned for future events 😂 I think combining a Vaca with BEA sounds like a BLAST!!! Jill from RantandRave may be trying to make it as well. An EPIC blogger meet-up could be in our future 🔮😃

      3. Haunted would have been an brilliant ARC to have, but at the same time if those are the only three I think you can definitely say you had a successful ARC haul this year, and yeah you’ll know for next year what to do when it comes to flash giveaways and all that! 😀
Ohh that’d be amazing! An epic blogger meet-up sounds like fun! ❤ 🙂

    1. Thank you 😊💕 it was a fun 1st experience with good company 😁 Certain Dark Things was blurbed by Daniel Jose Older the author of Shadowshaper & has some really impressive ratings. When I was browsing, the people at the Macmillan booth said that Certain Dark Things is hella good 😉

  3. Awesome haul, girl! You’re going to be busy for a while. And you got an ARC of Roseblood. Woohoo! Good for you! 👻 I bet some bloggers would’ve cut your hand off for that one. Haha! 😂 How did you make it out of there alive? lol I want to read Iron Cast. I love that cover and the Art Deco. It’s such an amazing cover. You got so much good stuff. I need to make it to a book convention at some point. Hopefully it will be BookCon. 🙂 That’s awesome you got all these books! I can only imagine you and Gretchen tearing it up at ComicCon. Sounds like so much fun. 🙂

    1. Thanks Jill! It was tons of fun, the ARCS are amazing but the experience was truly EPIC! I hadn’t heard anything about Roseblood til that day but I did know I wanted to read something by the author because her covers always catch my attention LOL. Iron Cast has been in my TBR for a few mths now & I wasn’t expecting to get a free hardcover. Love that it takes place during one of fave times in history: Prohibition era, just cuz well you know all sorts of illegal activity took place. I’m really looking forward to this one 😊 I do hope to see you next year if you’re able to make it. Gretchen & I had a well worked out system on day 2 to make up for our losses haha!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I only heard about Roseblood because a few bloggers mentioned being upset about not getting an ARC. I had no idea what it was about until then. The cover is cool and sounds pretty good. I also love the 1920’s. I’m a Fitzgerald fan so I guess that’s a given, huh? 🙂 I hope to make it out to New York that would be awesome.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. It does sound pretty innnnneresting, yea the 1920’s has always been a fave era, not surprised lol. Whelp I will cross my fingers & toes that you can make it to BEA in NY next year 😬😬😬cuz it would be EPIC! 💕

      3. That’s also my favorite era. And I also love the 80’s. I just got an email from NetGalley that I didn’t get approved for Roseblood. I have a new policy that I remove all books I don’t get approvals for off my TBR. Why should I waste the money, right? Splintered was good but moved like molasses most of the time and didn’t pique my interest enough to read the rest of the series. Too many books to read, but I hope you like it. 🙂

      4. Love the 80’s!!! & yeah I’ve noticed that after I get denied, for the most part I tend to lose interest in the titles. It’s not even that I’m taking it personal 😂😂😂 they just lose their shine in my eyes *shrugs shoulders* I keep hearing that RoseBlood is quite difficult to get a hold of. When I got the twitter. Last on my phone & walked over to the booth, the ARCS were on the floor for everyone to grab. Maybe 30 copies total so it’s whoever gets there 1st. Whelp I picked one up & by doing so, the publishing house people offered me Iron Cast. TBH, I was way more over the top excited for Iron Cast but that’s just me LOL! I’ll eventually read Roseblood but I have some time before publication. I’m thinking of reading Iron Cast sooner though 😉 funny cuz I just got an email approval from NetGalley for Fractured which I had requested a while back. They take quite some time with answering back. Funny thing, I noticed Edelweiss has been removing titles I requested from my queue w/out an approval or denial smh. I’m over it with that site.

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Yeah, exactly. They lose that shine in your eyes is right. I totally lose interest when I get turned down for an ARC, and yeah, it’s nothing personal just that we get so many free books that I don’t see why we should bother paying for one. I’ve heard some people mention Fractured. Not sure if I’ve seen reviews or not. I’ve been so out of it since I moved I don’t even know what day it is sometimes. 😂 I’m also done with Edelweiss. They can go kick rocks.

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Agreed lol. Fractured is getting a ton of buzz & I got curious so requested & approved. At the same time go declined for Caraval, lucky that this book is my most highly anticipated book in January & I’m cover lusting otherwise if forget about it. You’ll be back in the swing of things in no time Jill😉

  4. This was seriously like the best year for ARCs and hyped up books at comic con. I’m so happy we got to experience it together. Eeeeeeek especially since it was your first!! So so happy you had a great time. We got AMAZING books and I can’t wait till we read them =)

    1. Yes! I’m very happy to have had this year be my first! It was so much friggin fun & I know that’s also cuz you were there 😬💕 I’m feeling a little more confident now about next years BEA. Especially since it’s in the Javits & by day 3 I felt like I could navigate with my eyes closed that’s how much we burned our footprints in that floor 😂😂😂 so many great reads that I can slow down my buying for a while now. Other than Gemina, I don’t have anything that demands my $ right now LMAO!

  5. Such an amazing haul! 😍
RoseBlood is one of my most anticipated because I love Phantom of the Opera. I sent in a request to the publisher Friday evening and am obsessively checking my email hoping I get it haha. It sounds like you had so much fun! I wish there were more book events like this near me. I’m hoping to go to BEA next year if I can save up enough. *fingers crossed* 😊

    1. Omg Amanda! Her Every Fear was in my TBR & I won it by picking out a blue plastic egg from a bin…the blue ball allowed me to pick from a specific group of like 7 books but I zoned in on Her Every Fear with huge bug eyes 😂😂😂

  6. That’s it! I am moving to NY lol I am insanely jealous of all the amazing bookish events that occur in NY. Will you and Gretchen be attending BEA/BookCon in 2017? I was debating it with my friend, but we decided to wait off for 2018 and hope it is in Chicago again as it would be much cheaper for us to attend.

    ANYWAYS!!!

What a freaking fantastic haul!!! and I spotted The Female of the Species!!! I cannot wait for you to read it. I thought it was absolutely addicting.

    1. Thanks Amanda! it was a EPIC weekend & we had so much fun! the ARCS are great but the experience itself was the most fun I’ve had in a bit. I am definitely attending BEA/Bookcon 2017 with Gretchen, for us it’s the other way around with NY being the city we live in vs. Chicago. Its always a possibility that i’ll attend 2018 in Chicago it really all depends on time off. I hope to get to Female Of The Species soon since i’ve really been looking forward to that one 🙂

  7. Wow! So many books! And lots happening. So does bookcon happens every year? Will you be going again? I have never been but it definitely looks like something I would want to experience 😊

  8. Wow, what a haul! So they give away ARCs at these events? I have to go to the nearest event like this whenever there is one!
I just got The Bear and The Nightingale from NetGalley! Buddy read at some point?
