Manipulated Lives by H.A. Leuschel

manipulated-lives

Currently reading this short story collection and honestly taking my time with it because of the heavy subject matter. The author was nice enough to send me a eGalley a couple of weeks ago after seeing me express interest in her book. The writing is poignant & thought provoking. I’m currently on story 4 out of 5 and think I already have a favorite unless the last one dethrones my current favorite. My heart strings have been pulled while reading Manipulated Lives, making me think of my own personal experience with a manipulative friendship. My husband says that he’s never seen me take such copious notes lol, I just don’t want to forget anything with my terrible memory. I should be done reading Manipulated Lives by tomorrow & then a full review will follow 😉

Scrappy Little Nobody by Anna Kendrick

scrappy-little-nobody

I recently read & reviewed Scrappy Little Nobody (review here) by Anna Kendrick, I listened to the audiobook which I tend to do with all comedienne autobiographies/memoirs. I gave this one 4.5 stars, Kendrick delivered tons of laughs & an inside look to her childhood and come-up. Never once did she sound braggy of her fame, instead we get a humble down to earth Anna who is still in awe of just how far she’s come. If you’re a fan of her movies and find her funny, Scrappy Little Nobody is worth a read.

Lost Girls by Merrie Desetefano

lost-girls

Lost Girls by Merrie Destefano was HANDS DOWN a 5 star read for me (review here) for the plot, characters, writing, and yes even world building…a dark & seedy one. This is a Young Adult Thriller/Mystery yet I honestly got a more mature vibe to Destefano’s characters & found that to be refreshing. The Goodreads synopsis describes this as Black Swan meets Fight Club, and a more accurate description there is not! If you’re interested in characters that are morally gray, stories with awesome family dynamics, and adrenaline infused reads then this is the book for you 😉

Roseblood by A.G. Howard

roseblood

Goodreads Synopsis

In this modern day spin on Leroux’s gothic tale of unrequited love turned to madness, seventeen-year-old Rune Germain has a mysterious affliction linked to her operatic talent, and a horrifying mistake she’s trying to hide. Hoping creative direction will help her, Rune’s mother sends her to a French arts conservatory for her senior year, located in an opera house rumored to have ties to The Phantom of the Opera.

At RoseBlood, Rune secretly befriends the masked Thorn—an elusive violinist who not only guides her musical transformation through dreams that seem more real than reality itself, but somehow knows who she is behind her own masks. As the two discover an otherworldly connection and a soul-deep romance blossoms, Thorn’s dark agenda comes to light and he’s forced to make a deadly choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or face the wrath of the phantom who has haunted the opera house for a century, and is the only father he’s ever known.

A Phantom Of The Opera re-telling? I couldn’t resist picking this one up at NYC Comic Con/BookCon. I’ve always admired this authors book covers from afar & even have her Splintered series on my TBR. I’m hoping this one is a hit & if it is then 2017 will be the year I binge this authors books.

History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera

Goodreads Synopsis

When Griffin’s first love and ex-boyfriend, Theo, dies in a drowning accident, his universe implodes. Even though Theo had moved to California for college and started seeing Jackson, Griffin never doubted Theo would come back to him when the time was right. But now, the future he’s been imagining for himself has gone far off course.

To make things worse, the only person who truly understands his heartache is Jackson. But no matter how much they open up to each other, Griffin’s downward spiral continues. He’s losing himself in his obsessive compulsions and destructive choices, and the secrets he’s been keeping are tearing him apart.

If Griffin is ever to rebuild his future, he must first confront his history, every last heartbreaking piece in the puzzle of his life.

Thankful to have an eGalley from Soho Teen/Adam Silvera. After reading More Happy Than Not last year I started following Adam Silvera on social media & relaized how cool & down to earth this author is with his fanbase. Once I read the synopsis to History Is All You Left me I immediately knew that it was going to put me through it but I am SO READY! super excited to read this one & I know Adam will not fail me 🙂

  1. So happy you are enjoying Manipulated Lives! Well, enjoying is not the right term but … 🙂 I loved the writing. My favorite story was the very first. Manipulation has so many faces, it’s scary. Happy reading!

    1. Thanks Donna! And lol I get ya, I’m really enjoying the authors writing & feeling the pain conveyed through these stories. I really LOVE Tess and Tattoos, got me in all the feels smh 😢and yea Manipulation sure does have a lot of faces. It’s a sensitive topic for me because I experienced an intense manipulative friendship for years that ended catastrophically smh. So since then I am very apprehensive about forming new friendships all too quickly or allowing anyone too close. This collection hits close to home but I’m glad to have found it on your blog. Sometimes reflection is necessary to see how far you’ve come. Thanks Donna 😉

  2. It seems like you just finished some amazing books Lilly. I hope what your currently reading is as good as Scrappy Little Nobody and Lost Girls was for you! 😀
Also I really really hope you enjoy RoseBlood, that’s on my to-read list for when it’s released and I can’t wait to get around to it. I loved A.G. Howard’s Splintered series. Also I’ll be looking forwards to seeing your review for History is All You Left Me, that’s one I’ve been debating whether to add to my to-read list or not. 🙂

    1. Thanks Beth! always a pleasure when I see you here 🙂 Manipulated Lives is a well written collection of short stories that will probably stay in my mind for a very long time. It is a change of pace for me which is great because I like to switch it up from time to time. Roseblood was impulse for me, I know this author only by the cover art and when I saw it literally in a pile on the floor by the publishers table at Comic Con/Bookcon. I approached all skeptical like ya’ll just gonna leave this right here (20 copies or so) lol but they said grab 1 & so I did 😉 History Is All You Left Me is top 5 anticipated 2017 books for me. I LOVE this authors way of communicating with his fans and fellow authors. More Happy Than Not is still a favorite for me. Can’t wait to dig into these two 🙂

      1. That’s all right! 😀 That does sound like an interesting book, and I get what you mean about switching up genres every so often. I tend to stick to either YA contemporary or fantasy but it’s nice to switch between the two of them every so often. Plus I’m glad you’re enjoying Manipulated Lives at the moment! 😀
Wow that was an amazing find. The cover art for A.G. Howard’s books is amazing and if RoseBlood is anything like her Splintered series the story itself is going to be just as amazing.
If History is All You Left Me is one of your most anticipated releases for 2017 then it’s amazing you got an ARC! I really hope you love that one too, I may definitely have to add it to my to-read list! 😀

  3. Thanks Beth! I just added The Architect Of Song, another A.G. Howard that I haven’t read but have plenty of cover lust for after seeing it on Larkin at WonderfilledReads WWW. Happy reading December! ❤ ❤ ❤

  4. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for your review of Manipulated Lives. Growing up I had a REALLY manipulative best friend and it literally took me like 10 years to realize it 😛 So reading about the subject now would be really interesting.
Slightly jealous that you have History Is All You Left Me. I’m really looking forward to that book! I’ve heard great things about Silvera’s writing so I hope you enjoy it 🙂

    1. Awesome! I’m reading the last story now & it’s insane how accurately she portrays manipulative behavior. My experience was with a very close (not yet bestie) friend of 6 years. It took me all of 6 years to realize how bad it was. It didn’t end well, she lashed out by spreading lies about me out of spite. All because we were growing up & apart. Anyways LOL, girl I was declined the first time around on Edelweiss but then I decided to give it one more shot (a pro for Edelweiss vs NetGalley lol). Thankfully it worked, thank you 😊💕

      1. I’ll definitely need to read it! I honest to god don’t think I would’ve realized how manipulative she was if she and her family hadn’t moved and I got distance from her. Thank God for that 😛
I really need to start using Edelweiss more often. I use NetGalley constantly but I feel like more books are put on Edelweiss. Which may actually be a bad thing now that I’m thinking about it LOL

      2. Same here, distance was a real eye opener & I’m also glad & thankful for that. Edelweiss wasn’t working for me at first but my luck turned and now I’m trying to stay on track with all of them. No requesting for a bit in this end. NetGalley is good too but I really like that Edelweiss allows you more HAM 1 shot at getting approved. You may not qualify at one point but a few mths later, you might get approved OR you express your interest for the eGalley really well. With NetGalley you only get one shot. Edelweiss has the entire catalogues submitted by all publishing houses. I use both at the moment😊😂😂

        Than you Lourtno 💕

  5. I am BEYOND ready for History Is All You Left Me. I don’t have an early copy, but the book release is not far off, so I will just wait for the hardcover. I have the biggest crush on Adam Silvera. He’s amazing and so good to his followers/fans. ❤
