Hunted by Meagan Spooner

24485589

I’m currently reading Hunted by Meagan Spooner & I’m enjoying it much more than I thought I would be. I say this because I do feel a bit of a Young Adult Fantasy burn out coming on. I’ve read a few Beauty & The Beast re-tellings but none with an actual talking beast lol. This is as close as it gets to the original BATB we all know & love…didn’t think it would work tbh but I find myself wanting to get back to this story every time I put it down. So far my reading experience with Hunted has been nostalgia filled & i’m enjoying getting a bit of my childhood back 😉

You’re Welcome, Universe by Whitney Gardner

25701463

I recently read & reviewed You’re Welcome, Universe by Whitney Gardnerthis was a 5 star read for me and is very possibly one of my top favorites of 2017. If you’re looking for your next diverse read, look no further! this book has it all & will leave you asking why there aren’t more books like this one in YA (slowly improving but a long road ahead). Julia is a deaf Indian girl with 2 deaf moms, she likes to think of herself as a snowflake or an anomaly which made me instantly love her to pieces. If you’re a fellow New Yorker like myself, you’ll probably recognize some of the more famous places Julia likes to tag/graffiti. Red Sister (Book of the Ancestor #1)

25895524

I was born for killing – the gods made me to ruin.

At the Convent of Sweet Mercy young girls are raised to be killers. In a few the old bloods show, gifting talents rarely seen since the tribes beached their ships on Abeth. Sweet Mercy hones its novices’ skills to deadly effect: it takes ten years to educate a Red Sister in the ways of blade and fist.

But even the mistresses of sword and shadow don’t truly understand what they have purchased when Nona Grey is brought to their halls as a bloodstained child of eight, falsely accused of murder: guilty of worse.

Stolen from the shadow of the noose, Nona is sought by powerful enemies, and for good reason. Despite the security and isolation of the convent her secret and violent past will find her out. Beneath a dying sun that shines upon a crumbling empire, Nona Grey must come to terms with her demons and learn to become a deadly assassin if she is to survive…

Excuse me while I *eeeeeeeeK* my 1st Adult Fantasy book in years will be Red Sister by none other than Mark Larence!!! *happy dance* still can’t believe I managed to score a copy but thanking all of the book gods for this &  Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek for introducing me to Mark Lawrence. I didn’t intend to start with Red Sister seeing as he has other well loved books but ahhhh well! that’s the way the cookie crumbled so onward & forward! 😉

Did any of you participate in WWW Wednesday? if so, drop that link & i’ll swing by your blog for a peek. I’m trying super hard to stick to my excel spreadsheet but I know Strange the Dreamer may be the one to break me cuz its LAINI! & I love that quirky Goddess <3<3<3!

    1. YESSSS! I’m hoping to LOVE it! I do however wish I had a physical copy, I flipped through the 1st few pgs of the eGalley & it starts with a helpful list of characters in this world…its a pretty long list lol.

      1. Ha, yeah, there’s quite a few characters, lots of adult fantasy have a glossary of characters though, normally at the back but often with far more actual characters, races, houses, etc.

I think you will love it, you really should enjoy it, think Nevernight but better.😀

      2. Awesome! I’m super excited to get into this one as soon as I finish my current read which by the looks of it should be tonight 😃

P.S. Own Nevernight but haven’t read it yet 🙈

    1. it sure is Ashley! I put together a spreadsheet to help keep track of my ARCS & stay on top of the publication dates. It also serves as a good reference when I get the itch to request lol, one look at the sheet tells me what I can & cannot do 😉

    1. I’m about 5% away from finishing it & OMG!!! A re-telling closer to the original, I have NOT come across 😄 so good! & I can’t wait to watch BATB, hopefully this weekend 🤗🤗🤗

  1. Yay! I’m also reading Hunted and so far It’s pretty good! I haven’t read any books from Mark Lawrence but I would love to read Red Sister because it really sounds kickass. I hope you love it! 🙂

  2. I cannot wait to see how Red Sister sits with you ❤ I think you are going to find a lot of appreciation in the way Lawrence has managed to build such a raw and strong female protagonist! The book is a smooth read too. It doesn't take long at all to get a sense of the different sisterhoods, the magic system and lands. The are very well thought out but not too complex. Excited for you 🙂

    1. You know how I feel about my strong female protogs Danielle! *givem to me* haha! I finished Hunted just now & will most likely write my review tonight just so that I can start Red Sister with a clear mind. Between you & Drew, ya’ll have me hyped up about starting this one 😉

    1. Thanks Kelly! 😃💕I hope you enjoy You’re Welcome, Universe just as much as I did 😆 & that we enjoy Red Sister! I’ve only heard great things about it from some awesome Fantasy book bloggers 😄

  3. These all seem like amazing books Lilly. My interest in You’re Welcome Universe was kind of reborn after reading your review for it. 🙂 I definitely want to try and get around to that one soon.
Also Hunted is right at the top of my most anticipated releases list for this month. I love Beauty and the Beast retellings (it would be a shame if this one did put you in a fantasy burn out though) so I can’t wait to get started on it myself! 😀

    1. Thanks Beth, I’ve been reading some great books but too much of the same genre can burn this bookworm out. However, having finished Hunted earlier today, I can now say that I LOVED IT! Even though I’ll be taking a brief break from YA Fantasy while I read Red Sister, it doesn’t take away from how good Hunted is. It’s even got me excited for BATB this Sunday 🤗🤗🤗 hope you enjoy these books as much as I did 😉

      1. That’s all right, and I guess sometimes a break is needed when you spend a long time reading one genre. Pretty soon I may feel the same way about fantasy given I’m pretty much binge reading that genre at the moment.
I’m glad to hear that about Hunted. I can’t wait to get started on it myself when I finally get my hands on a copy! 😀 ❤

      2. Haha! Yea YA Fantasy burnout in full effect here in my corner but that’s ok. My current read has me hooked (Red Sister) with its Arya Stark vibes. I’ll be on the lookout for your thoughts on Hunted 😉💕

  4. Hunter sounds like a great read! Especially if it’s a BATB retelling that’s actually close to the original. I hope you will enjoy your books this week and happy reading! Here’s my WWW.

      1. Yay! I’m actually planning on watching the original Disney version again before seeing the movie… Although now I’m wondering whether to get a copy of Hunted and read that one as well before.

  5. I just saw Hunted on Beth’s blog and thought that it looked really interesting! I really like retellings, as long as they’re interesting. This one seems to be really promising. And I’ll definitely have to add You’re Welcome Universe. That one sounds unique but extremely entertaining. I really want to get around to that one soon. Gotta read some more Adult Fantasy. There seems to be some REALLY good ones out there!

    1. Hunted! Finished it this afternoon Azia! And OMGGGG! it’s a repelling that’s close to the original classic which I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy but eeeeeek! I did! Haha! Now to top it off, I’ll be watching BATB this Sunday for all the feels 🤗🤗🤗 Red Sister on deck for tonight, I completely agree that there are some really great adult fantasy novels out there at the moment 😃

      1. That’s sounds awesome! I’m so happy you liked it 🙂 It seems to be doing really well! Which is already really promising. And can’t wait to see what you think of Red Sister! I think it might be my first adult fantasy in a while 😀

  6. I cannot wait to read both your Hunted and Red Sister review! I really admire you for just reading and reading but I can’t imagine the burn out, omg! I want to read Red Sister so bad!! But the way this slump is set up, I’ll probably read it in the summer instead of when it comes out in April 4th *wink wink*

    1. I’m really hoping to write the Hunted review tonight but we’ll see cuz so far this week I’ve been experiencing some major drowsiness. The YA Fantasy genre has burned me out so I NEED a little break from it and prob won’t return to it til 2 more books down the line & that’s only for a review that will be due lol. Red Sister I thought would be intimidating since it’s Mark Lawrence & it starts off with a glossary lol, but I dove right in & just wanna keep reading. Main protog = Arya Stark! frikkin hooooooked! haha! I think you’d enjoy it so I won’t let you forget this summer lol 😉

  7. I’m really exicted for Hunted just because of the fact that it’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling so I defiently can’t for your thoughts on it! And Red Sister sounds interesting, I’ll be keeping a lookout for your thoughts on that one too. Happy reading Lilly!! 😊💕

    1. I promise that review is coming, I’m trying to adjust to this Daylight Savings but it’s kicking my butt😂😂😂 I planned on writing it tonight but I got home so late after being stuck in traffic for 2 hrs. Anyways lol, hoping to write it tomorrow 🤞🏼maybe I’ll even do a movie review 🤔

      1. I can relate, Daylight Savings has been kicking my butt too. It’s like you lose one hour of sleep and suddenly you feel exhausted lol. And boo on the traffic! That’s no fun. Either way, I look forward to your review whenever you are able to get it up. 😁
Also, I looked for You’re Welcome, Universe while at B&N yesterday and they didn’t have it. 😢

  8. Awesome list of books, as always, Lilly! There is nothing shameful in enjoying reading Hunted! Just because it has been getting reviews all over the place doesn’t mean you can’t love it. Own it!!

I can’t WAIT to read You’re Welcome, Universe. It sounds awesome. I hope Red Sister is also amazing! Look at what Drew is doing to us all. O_o

    1. Thank you Jackie! 😆😆😆 Hunted seriously had BATB retelling written all over it. It actually ran parallel to the original with the exception of the talking silverware of course haha! (Best part of you ask me). I’m super excited to go see the movie this Sunday with my best friend + it’s Emma Watson 🙌🏼 & Drew has been slowly pulling us all over to the dark side for quite some bit we’ve just been none the wiser 😂😂😂

  9. Ahhh so glad to see that you enjoyed You’re Welcome, Universe! I recently finished it myself and while it wasn’t quite a five-star read for me, I enjoyed it quite a bit as well. And Red Sister sounds so interesting, I hope you like it! It’s been a while since I picked up an adult fantasy as well… I might do another Brandon Sanderson book soon. 🙂
