Debut author Danica Nava introduces us to Ember Lee Cardinal, a Chickasaw woman who is down on her luck and feeling like it’s time to do things a little differently. Thirty seven job rejections won’t deter her, she’s on a mission to get out of working at the local bowling alley where everybody knows your name but scrubbing toilets is not endgame. Ember has taken some accounting courses but she hasn’t finished any of them and isn’t certified in the field. This however, doesn’t stop her from applying to her dream accounting job in the Park Avenue area of Oklahoma City. Ember employs some creativity while applying for this position by changing her race, for this job she is white Ember who is further along with her accounting experience and qualifications. Ember’s resumé is selected for an interview and before she knows it, she has snagged a corporate job as an accounting assistant. She decides to go for it and improvise along the way but also continue the lie and then lie some more, she’s actually pretty good at it until she crosses paths with the IT guy Danuwoa Colson. A fellow Native American working for the same company, Danuwoa is beautiful to look at. He isn’t hiding his race but in their flirting he’s kind of letting on that her lies don’t add up, at least not to him but he’s game to play along.

Was this a little stressful at times to read? yea just a bit but in a fun and for some may be a bit unrealistic. Although it may not seem like something that happens, Ember’s situation is not at all unheard of. I’ve been on the receiving end of rejection in a room full of white hopeful interviewees while being the only Latinx applicant. To say or think that racism and prejudices don’t rear their ugly heads during the interviewing of applicants is unreal. I found it more unlikely to not have been caught earlier but Ember is quick thinking and resourceful, she was killing it in this new role. Ethically she should’ve completed her courses but I gave her kudos all the way for using what she had learned up until that point and super exceeding expectations. At her new workplace we see Ember navigate microagressions aimed at some of her co-workers from different ethnic backgrounds. She isn’t above checking the higher ups for their racist remarks and for that alone I loved Ember. I rounded up from a 3.5 to 4 stars simply because although I enjoyed my time watching Ember wiggle her way out of tough moments where her lies came dangerously close to being uncovered, it was perhaps too much time.  There is a no-dating policy at work but that doesn’t stop them from gravitating towards one another. Dan provided a different perspective by openly embracing his race and not really caring if it made others uncomfortable. I wanted more time spent between Ember and Danuwoa, especially since Dan didn’t judge her for how she got her foot in the door. If anything he seemed entertained by her scheming 😂 which hey! we love a King who loves you for you! I’ll be keeping an eye out for more from Danica Nava 💜

Cassie Rutherford has decided to up and go buy a historic coastal cottage in Boneyard Key Florida after realizing just how much her social circle of friends has matured, married and most have had kids. She ditches Orlando and seeks comfort in a yellow cottage right by the ocean in a town that makes its money off of its haunted ghost tours. Her house seems quaint up until strange things start to happen in her new home. Magnets spelling out words she knows she didn’t arrange as part of her morning message on the fridge like “Wrong” and “My House” appear the next morning. She can never get her laptop to charge which really interferes with her work from home career and leads her to seek out a local coffee shop to work from. It’s not Publix but they sell coffee and that’s all she’s looking for…that and WIFI.

Local coffee shop owner Nick is used to tourists coming by and overstaying their welcome using his wifi connection while sipping on the same cup of Jo for hours on end. He doesn’t think Cassie is any different and doesn’t hold back from a jab or two at her type. The tourist type. When Cassie informs him she’s a Floridian native just not from the coastal side of the state, he is instantly curious as to why anyone from Orlando would move to Boneyard Key. Even more intriguing is just how much Cassie hasn’t heard of their ghostly town. So he volunteers to be her tour guide of sorts while holding back some truths about his own connections to the founding families and their ghostly ties.

The vibeZ Book lovers! I love a beachside read set in a small town with cute coffee shops and town happenings. This time Jen DeLuca gives us some bonus ghost characters who refuse to NOT tell their story with the help of the towns inhabitants. There are 12 prominent families with descendants still living in town, some of which can speak/see their dead ancestors. Nick spends his evenings walking with Cassie along the shore and sharing stories of the towns history and that of her newly purchased home. Cassie starts to piece things together while really enjoying Nick’s vibe and attention…until he starts acting differently which throws the story down the path of an unraveling mystery. The ghostly things happening to both Nick and Cassie were at times funny (text messages Nick Received from his ghost) and at others a bit creepy, that’s because the righting of wrongs was at the center of this paranormal story. It’s cute until you realize the pain behind the haunting of Cassie’s home. If you’re looking for haunted vibes on a beachside setting, this ones for you. The romance was there but the driving force is the mystery from the very start. We also get introduced to ghost tour guide Sopie and librarian Theo as side characters that I would LOVE to see get their own nerdy ghost story in the next Boneyard Keys installment 🤗

Web series producer Hallie Barrett has just been dumped by her co-worker who also happens to be the star of the online series she was producing. Even though Hallie is way better off without that guy (all the red flags), she’s also stuck having to see him every day. This while also being tasked with coming up with a new series idea to present for the company competition or say goodbye to this beloved job she’s worked very hard for. While searching for inspiration one late night, she stumbles across a docuseries where the handsome host is passionately covering the legend of Bigfoot. She doesn’t believe in any of this stuff but she can’t help but binge watch every single episode as she asks herself why she’s dedicating so much time to what is clearly myth/legend. One lightbulb moment later and Hallie feels inspired to reach out to the Paranormal conspiracy theorist Hayden Hargrove. She hopes to convince him to turn his hit podcast into a web show. Hayden seems unsure he’s the right guy with the presence needed to pull off a web show and he is absolutely right! the banter that easily is exchange between Hallie and Hayden while she challenges his claims with a dose of skepticism is missing, until she steps in to help him during his audition. Her producers LOVE the chemistry they’re seeing play out between them! they see a viewership tuning in just for them and ask that they do the show together. While it isn’t what she’s expecting, as long as he’s oK with it she’s fair game to join while also producing.

10/10 I recommend listening to the audiobook for the cool/nerdy alien space music played during snippets of the web show, so much fun! I had such a good time with this book and found myself binge reading it while prepping a big meal, laughing and smiling from start to finish. I loved how even though Hallie didn’t believe in any of the Bigfoot and Mothman theories, she still respected how passionate Hayden was with his research and delivery. Hayden in turn sees all of Hallie’s quirks as charming and gives off all the green flags she is not used to seeing in a love interest. The audiobook narrators SLAYED their performance making the chemistry that catches the eye of Hallie’s producers MOST definitely felt in the audiobook, it’s easy to get wrapped up in their romance. I’ve already Marlowe’s next book Love At First Sighting to be released August 2025. If you’re looking for a Romantic Comedy with paranormal elements, I HIGHLY recommend giving Love and Other Conspiracies a go 😉

The Seventh Veil Of Salome is a dual timeline/multi-perspective Historical Fiction set during 1950’s Hollywood and Biblical times (with background appearances of Jesus who at the time is performing miracles on the townspeople.) We follow three women as their stories unfold: Vera Larios an unknown Mexican ingenue who is cast in the lead role of Salome; Nancy Hartley an actress whose career has run dry and is starving for a lead role that will grant her access to a life of fame and fortune; Princess Salome – in love with a prophet who has angered many of the higher officials looking to silence him but not before he speaks on the misfortune that is to come onto Salome’s stepfather.

We meet Vera Larios who’s just been cast in a swords-and-sandals biblical movie that is being directed by a notoriously difficult to work with director. Vera has no acting experience whatsoever but she caught his eye as the only ideal fit to play the role of the beautiful Salome. In the bible, Salome is known for the beheading of John the Baptist. Vera who has spent most of her life being overlooked or dismissed by her mother for her darker complexion saw this as an opportunity to step into the limelight and a chance to breakaway from the toxicity at home. On the film set and in the media she encounters misogyny and racism from men and women. The men objectify her, the women see her as stealing their roles with her “exotic” features, while the media portrays hers as an explosive unpredictable Latina. As the movie begins to film, we get an inside look at Hollywood during this time as the cast of Salome parties and gives the media the tea for their headlines. Nancy Hartley on the other hand is desperately trying to secure a lead role by any means necessary, Vera being a Mexican woman fuels her ire. We see an unhinged woman’s downward spiral powered by hate and racism. The cunning Salome has suitors lined up but she’s set her eyes on the one man she absolutely can’t have and whose days are numbered. will she choose love or power?

It wouldn’t be a SMG novel if it followed the same style of writing with each story she delivered. The Seventh Veil Of Salome is part documentary told through the lens of multiple characters reflecting on what transpired on the set of Salome. While also traveling back to the biblical times of Salome and John the Baptiste. Each of these ambitious women deliver such a captivating story that as much as I was enjoying the perspective I was in, I was also thinking of the other women’s situations. Whether you’re new to SMG or an avid reader of her books, the atmospheric writing alone will guarantee a rich reading experience. I’m not sure what is in SMG’s pen but no matter the time period/plot, the ease with which you are transported make all of their books a must read.

The Next Best Fling features a plus sized Latina female librarian who is feeling stuck with a case of unrequited love for her best friend. A bestie who is getting married to a mutual college friend leaving Marcela feeling like the ship has sailed on their second chance romance. They briefly dated years ago but Marcela always felt as if she was never quite enough for him. Fast forward to the events leading up to the wedding and with it, his older brother and ex-NFL Player Theo’s return. Theo is also harboring some unrequited love of his own and its for the bride-to-be. They were all friends at one point but his feelings for the bride led him to put some distance between them for some years. Now he’s back and is considering letting her know exactly how he feels before she marries his brother who he has some friction with. Cue Marcela who overhears his plan to stop the wedding with his confession and decides to stop him. Marcela talks some sense into Theo and so begins their friendship which leads some in their inner circle to believe they’re actually dating. Including the groom who begins to aggressively try to persuade his bestie Marcela that his brother is not the great guy she thinks he is. This leads Marcela and Theo to let the lie roll so to speak while actually exploring a friends with benefits relationship.
I’m always on the hunt for Latinx romance to feed my soul, these books typically have families as supporting characters and delicious dishes being cooked in the kitchen being served alongside the steamy romance. The Next Best Fling checked off all the boxes while also stirring my appetite for some authentic Mexican food. Marcela’s mother always having food on the stove or set aside for her was heart warming and made me think of my own dad who loved to feed his daughters. I also loved the library setting and actually seeing Marcela in her work environment where she thoughtfully chooses books for the Young Adult community reading in her branch. The fun nights of Cosplay she and her friend organize to really get kids excited to read and be a part of something had me smiling and wishing I had that as a teen. Marcela is one of the coolest FMC’s I’ve come across with the exception of the lack of transparency she had with Theo while he was confessing his years long feelings for the bride to be. They were in the same exact boat except Theo spent it mostly in the dark about Marcela’s feelings for his brother the groom. Other than this, I could relate to Marcela SO MUCH! her insecurities absolutely came into play while handling her feelings and it was empowering watching her come into the realization that she’s bad a**! and NOT undesirable. Theo being the sweet kind big guy that he is allowed Marcela to see she was settling before just by simply listening and observing all of the little things she loves. Instead of making someone the center of her world, she was being doted on like she deserved. Friends to Lovers is my favorite trope to read from and although there isn’t a foundation for their friendship, it does evolve as one first before it turn romantic. This is the first installment in the Librarians In Love series by Gabriella Gamez and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.

Spoiler Free Review: Starling House by Alix E. Harrow

Title: Starling House

Author: Alex E. Harrow

Pub. Date: October 23 2023

Genre: Gothic Fantasy/Horror

Format: Physical Illumicrate Edition

Publisher: Tor Books

 Pages: 308

It’s become a summer time tradition for me to read at least one horror book and since Alex E. Harrow has been on my list of authors to read from this year, here we are! Starling House was actually an eARC I received last year but never seemed to be in the right mood for it, not picking it up sooner was a mistake. This book is a whole vibe whether you’re looking for a creepy house to get sucked into or not. We meet our MC Opal while she’s living in a motel in Eden town Kentucky with her sixteen year old brother Jasper. Orphaned and homeless, they’ve learned how to get by on their own in a town where none of its residents have much luck anyway. Think dirty running water and smoke filled skies stemming from one greedily owned coal mining company. In Eden there is also the Starling property with a big mysterious house previously owned by Eleanor Starling, a recluse 19th century author who disappeared. Starling wrote a children’s book titled “the Underland” which featured beasts of all forms, her book eventually being deemed too dark for continued circulation. The Starling house has seen many warden’s and whenever one dissapears or dies, another shortly arrives. Opal who once was an aspiring author, is intrigued by E. Starling and so she finds a way to get hired as a cleaning lady by the current warden Arthur Starling. Opal soon finds out she isn’t the only one interested in the Starling house and the powers that be will stop at nothing to uncover its secrets.

We love books that feature books in them, almost always they serve the purpose of pulling the reader in. I’m already a sucker for small town vibes even when that town exudes “Do Not Enter” vibes, sign me up! Starling House is slow paced with a healthy balance of plot/character driving the story. The warden of the Starling estate Adam Starling reminds me a bit of To Kill a Mockingbird’s Boo Radley but with a sword and secretly bad a**! the MC Opal is hard not to like, she openly admits to thieving for a good cause which in her case is her brother Jasper’s future. Although I typically don’t support stealing for a living, this town in particular is just rotten to its core. Opal and her brother Jasper are the town rejects but not a care is given to what other people think and I love that for them. We get a strong sibling relationship, found family that won’t quit on Opal, long buried town secrets, a house you’ll come to see the magic in, and a love story between two misfits. Centered at the heart of this story are themes of racism, incest, and grief. Some of these themes are a part of the towns history and others such as the racism Jasper experiences due to the color of his skin are also a driving force. The fictional town of Eden Kentucky with its coal mines that were historically mined by slaves is an important piece of the story. This was one key element I would’ve liked to see more fleshed out since it was referenced and does play a role in one of the characters lives. Haunting, atmospheric, gritty while also melancholy…just what I was looking for in a Gothic Horror read this summer 🖤

Full disclosure, I am NOT a huge fan of the hate-to-love trope but when done right it’s simply a delight! Chloe Liese introduced us to the Wilmot Sister’s in Two Wrongs Make a Right  with Bea and Jamie’s story (Aquarius/Capricorn match). In this book we get Katerina aka Kat and Christopher’s story (Taurus/Capricorn match). Why did this one work for me? because it’s family centered and there’s already a foundation that’s built up from childhood. Kat is neurodivergent, she has ADHD and feels most comfortable traveling and making fast connections with people that don’t necessarily need to last. She feels like an outsider in her own family and when life brings her back home, she’s faced with repressed feelings that were never addressed. Enter Christoper Petruchio, the guy next door she has a hate to love dynamic with. The truth is, she’s also been harboring feelings for Christopher. What she wasn’t expecting was to be met with so much hostility from Chris because of her detached way of being with her own family. Christopher just can’t wrap his head around why or how Kate keep so much distance between herself and her family when family is all he’s ever wanted. For Christopher, the Wilmot’s are a safe haven. They are his neighbors who took him in as one of their own along side their three girls when he lost his parents. He doesn’t shy away from making his disdain for Kate known every chance he gets!

*•.¸♡ 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝚙𝚎𝚘𝚙𝚕𝚎 𝙸 𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎𝚍 𝚠𝚎𝚛𝚎 𝚑𝚞𝚛𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐, 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚘𝚗𝚌𝚎, 𝙸 𝚊𝚌𝚝𝚞𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚏𝚎𝚕𝚝 𝚕𝚒𝚔𝚎 𝙸 𝚌𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍 𝚑𝚎𝚕𝚙 𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚖, 𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚗 𝚒𝚏 𝚘𝚗𝚕𝚢 𝚒𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚜𝚖𝚊𝚕𝚕 𝚠𝚊𝚢. ♡¸.•*

There were so many moments I loved while reading this book but tbh, this is one where my appreciation only grew the more time passed away from this story. There aren’t many books I can say I felt seen in but this is the closest one that  has come to describing the detachment a neurodivergent person feels while also loving those you call family so very dearly. That Chloe Liese wrote Christopher in a supportive way once the puzzle pieces clicked for him, filled my heart up for so many reasons. Having siblings that also are neurodivergent could quite possibly be the reason why Kate’s family is filled with the BEST supportive/understanding humans. I just loved seeing her finally feel seen but also spoken up for. To hear her families feelings about Kate be voiced and it be positive was heartwarming and hope inspiring. Also, seeing an MC with ADHD portrayed in the most selfless of ways, placing others before their own needs and wants was reaffirming for this readers. It isn’t uncommon to be dubbed as being purposely detached and cold, this at least has been my own experience with just being misunderstood. Chloe Liese’s back-list is now a priority for me to make my way through, I simply look forward to whatever this author writes next.

Where Sleeping Girls Lie is the much anticipated Young Adult Contemporary Mystery novel fans of Ace Of Spades were highly anticipating. I remember reading AOS and not being able to put that book down for too long before I was carving out time to jump back into that story.  Five years later we are introduced to the dark academia setting that is Alfred Nobel Academy boarding school where Sade Hussein has enrolled for her third year. Previously homeschooled, Sade arrives on the scene as this mysterious character who is trying to keep a low profile. We learn early on that her parents have both passed away and prior to her father’s passing, he maintained a strict upbringing for Sade where boarding school was just simply out of the question. The prestigious Alfred Nobel Academy is prepared for Sade’s arrival and have already assigned her a roommate to show her around campus. Elizabeth seems cool with her love of horticulture and willingness to share her space with newcomer Sade, including her best friend Basil. All seems well until it’s not, Elizabeth goes missing and the students of Alfred Nobel Academy suspect Sade has something to do with it. Sade who carries grief and secrets of her own decides to try and find answers to the secrets being kept within the walls of her new school.

This is a slow-burn mystery set in a school that is thoroughly fleshed out giving the reader a sense of darkness in its setting and the shady students who attend. I loved the initial walk-through of the campus Elizabeth gives Sade, the author skillfully brought each wing of the campus to life through Elizabeth’s commentary on the schools history. The privileged majority attending Alfred Nobel Academy come from white families. After her disappearance we see Sade capture the attention of the popular girls in school, something that Basil (Elizabeth’s BFF who is the only other person interested in finding answers as well) finds difficult to believe. Nonetheless, Sade begins to immerse herself in social circles that get her closer to unearthing the truths she’s looking for. What I didn’t love? the pacing was beyond slow and this is coming from someone who enjoys slow-burn. Too much time was spent on the day-to-day activities vs. the development of the story/mystery. The time spent on the mundane did enhance the atmospheric vibes making this truly fit the dark academia category but it also made it feel as if it could’ve been done in less pages What I LOVED? Sade and Basil/his guinea pig provided the lightness and bits of humor that were needed to balance out the much heavier/darker themes unraveling. The Mean Girls circle known in this story as the “Unholy Trinity” who include Persephone were an interesting add-in. There’s this quiet attraction between Persephone and Sade that is jumpstarted on an intellectual/feminist level that I really enjoyed. Lastly, the themes brought to light by the time this mystery fully unravels have a history of being underreported in academic institutions. Seeing these issues covered in Young Adult Contemporary novels continues to raise awareness. I’m looking forward to Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé’s next story which I’m sure will come with some new memorable characters.

Lara Croft meets Indiana Jones and they embark on a dig set in the Mexican jungle…but make it hot?!? 🤗 there was no passing this up, even more so when the female main character is a Mexican archeologist with a penchant for adventure. Dr. Soccorro “Corrie” Mejia has devoted her academic career to becoming world renowned expert on the ancient warrior of the Aztec Empire Chimalli. She’s invited to an all expenses paid dig to search for Chimali’s long lost remains, the warrior she believes is one of her ancestors. When she learns that the lead archeologist is none other than her academic rival Dr. Ford Matthews, Corrie is put in the position of having to rise above or miss out. Corrie is a woman of color working in a male dominated field, her work should garner her the respect she deserves. Instead Corrie is objectified by her peers which leads her to believe this is the reason why she was overlooked to lead this dig. The point of contention throughout this expedition is the fact that Dr. Ford a white cishet male with knowledge of Chimali (but not quite as much as Corrie) was offered THE once in a lifetime opportunity she has worked so hard for.

The plot thickens when we find out Corrie and Ford have actually already hooked up years before becoming the successful archeologists they are now. She can’t deny her attraction to ford or the awkwardness that comes with having to work in close proximity to him. Neither can Ford but he also has his eye on the prize, the hefty pay-out from their investor that will help with a personal situation he’s dealing with. One that is weighing heavy on his heart and mind and that is also leading to questionable/ethical decisions. What didn’t work for me? the ick feeling Ford’s actions left on me made it hard to ship this duo even though I really wanted to. Certain things he did made it hard to think he even deserved a woman like Corrie who already has the odds stacked against her in their shared field. I’m not saying he was totally irredeemable, I just wish the core of this story wasn’t based on a less than favorable move he made.

What I loved? National Treasure is one of my all time favorite adventure movies and this book does read like one with high stakes. I loved their archeological discoveries and theories of Chimali. Throwing in the artifact smuggler angle heightened the danger you’d typically get while watching Lara Croft/Indiana Jones in action. Lastly, I’d be quicker to call this friends to lovers than hate to love. I’m always going to prefer friends to lovers, the history between Corrie and Ford is a part of this story giving the reader a sense of picking up right where they left off. The steamy scenes were giving me LIFE! while also raising a brow at how well Ford’s more intimate chapters were written ☺️ I’m all for this becoming a romance/adventure series, the intrigue and spice alone would keep me flipping pages!

It’s 1918, Laura Iven has been honorably discharged from the Medical Corps as a highly decorated field nurse. Wounded while on the field, Laura returns to Canada where she receives word of her brother Freddie’s presumed death in combat. A box is delivered to her with his personal effects, Freddy is presumed to be dead because his body was never recovered. How then, have his belongings made it to her doorstep? Laura decides she must go back to active duty in Belgium if only to be closer to the front lines and get answers/certain proof of Freddie’s demise. What she isn’t anticipating is to be met with an alternate possibility. A man who has deserted the battlefield and is caught is then executed by the military. Did Freddy leave the battlefield? or could he still be alive? and is his fate worse than if he had been killed in the field?

Told in dual point of view and past/present timelines between 1917 and 1918, we get Freddy’s account as he is trapped in a ditch created by one of the many explosives dropped. In this ditch is also a German soldier who has been severely wounded. Hans Winter should be his enemy but in these presumed final hours, he is a comfort. Together they help each other get out of that hole but are unsure of which way to go once out. They both can’t fathom the thought of returning to their respective front lines. In the chaos of raining shells and gunfire they meet a mysterious man who owns a hotel and has a penchant for creating music. The type of tunes that can make you forget the misery that surrounds you. An escape from the violence and senseless killings they’ve witnessed. For some soldiers the escapism being offered was too good to pass up.

This was not the book I thought we’d get next from one of my favorite authors and yet this story will remain with me for years to come. Full transparency, I am never the one to pick up books set during WWI or WWII. That being said, it’s Katherine Arden! she can write the hell of a story and creates characters who leave their mark. If you love books with a speculative touch then this one is for you! it is slow paced within reason, every time I opened this book I felt instantly transported to the front lines and it terrified me. Heavily researched (notes and photos included in the Barnes & Noble special edition) and delivered by a skilled pen, it is haunting and feels like a story that needed to be told. In her author’s note Arden speaks of the juxtaposition of nurses in corsets while wearing gas masks while cavalry charged at tanks. It really doesn’t get any more real than that. It was the author’s note and photos of the graves she visited that hit hard and make for a powerful read. It’s a story about times of war but also hope where there’s none to be found. Grief and trauma as well as remembrance. There are feelings of repressed rage we see play out in characters like the mysterious hotel owner. The same rage Arden says can be felt to this day while walking alongside the final resting place of many French and German. A powerful read for fans of Arden who were patiently waiting for her next spellbinding tale.
