September Wrap-up & Book Haul

September…a month that I am usually looking forward to every year by the time the sweltering 90 degree weather in June make it’s presence felt. This year however, I was a bit apprehensive about all of the changes taking place with my little one starting in a “real” school lol. After completing pre-k in the same center as her daycare, this would be her 1st venture into an actual school building. Thankfully all went well & we just received news that she is actually at a 1st grade level. Could not be any more happier honestly. My reading month however, wasn’t the best but I managed to get 5 in & a very special book event (check out my About Last Night post here). October will be MUCH better πŸ˜‰

I’ve linked my reviews for each of my reads down below

Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida CΓ³rdova β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… (5 stars)

Empire of Storms by Sara J. Maas β˜…β˜…β˜… (3.5 stars @ the time of review but…lol)

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… (5 stars)

Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… (5 stars)

Wrecked by Maria Padian β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… (4 stars)

After having a pretty slow book buying month in August (view August Book Haul here)…well slower than my usual LOL, I thought September would be mayhem but I think I kept it reasonable HAHA!…

I’ve read 2 of the books I hauled in September & i’m seriously avoiding Crooked Kingdom smh, I’m just not ready Gals & Ghouls *hides face* to let go of my favorite fictional characters or this deliciously dark world *sigh* avoiding book spoilers on Twitter has become quite the challenge. I’m not sure what i’ll read after my current eGalley (When The Moon Was Ours), i’ve managed to get my Netgalley ratio at a respectable percentage that i’m content with. It may not be perfect but it’ll do πŸ˜‰

As for my viewing, cuz ya girl really does love TV & movies! it was actually really meh LOL. I didn’t catch any movies in the theatre BUT I did binge watch season 2 of Gotham with the hubby. truthfully speaking, I wasn’t a big fan of the first season but it’s so atmospheric & they did an AMAZING job of giving it authentic classic Gotham feels that we stuck with it. I enjoyed season 2 WAY more because we get a different side of Gordon, he’s been through a lot that I won’t list because of spoilers but he’s pretty bad a** now. The performance I enjoyed the most however, goes to Cory Michael Smith who plays Edward Nygma aka future Riddler. Season 2 focused on Nygma’s development into who he will ultimately become. I can’t get enough of this guy’s shenaningans but in all seriousness he truly kills it on this show *tips hat off*

Fun fact: a lot of the outdoor filming in Gotham was done around my neighborhood. Some around the corner from my block & other shots were filmed by the train station near my place. We often joke our neighborhood might as well be Gotham since it’s so Gray smh. Whelp I guess word got out to FOX & Gotham has come to us. My husband took photos of the vehicles parked overnight for the shoot. There’s a pretty big old abandoned building that looks like an old bank but served as a Boys & Girls club many years ago, that was also used in one of their episodes where a banquet/party was filmed. I couldn’t get photos of that w/out trespassing though LOL.

Hope you all had an AMAZING September! We are now in October & i’m sure a lot of us are looking forward to all of the exciting book releases this month. What are some October books you all are looking forward to?

  1. Congrats to your little one! πŸ™‚
You’ve had a brilliant reading month, with so many good ratings! πŸ™‚ I am so happy you enjoyed Furiously Happy. At the moment, I read a couple of pages at night to cheer me up. Seeing so much praise for Six of Crows, I still can’t believe everyone agrees about how awesome it is, haha.

    1. Thanks Donna! πŸ˜ŠπŸ’•it was a good quality reading mth with the exception of Empire of Storms but I’ve since released that beast & can’t continue downing the rating πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Six of Crows however, is my best read of the mth & probably yearπŸ˜‰ Furiously Happy was such a good time smh, I’m a fan now & subbed to her blog. Glad that it’s your happy bookπŸ’•
I’m prob getting the audiobook version of her first book this mthπŸ™‚

  2. I have some serious catching up to do with Gotham, so cool that it was shot around your neighborhood. You still had a great reading month in spite of everything so kudos to you! I am so happy for Izzy. After Comic Con, I hope our schedules go back to order and that we may read all the books lol. AHH!!!

  3. You also had a great reading month! And it looks like you enjoyed all of your reads for the most part. Sometimes when I go back and look through my reviews I think I wasn’t harsh enough with my ratings because I only have 4/5 stars. But maybe I’ve just been reading great books πŸ˜‚ I really want to read Wrecked and Furiously Happy as well! Would you recommend listening to Furiously Happy rather than reading it?

    1. Thanks Alex, LOL I think the more books I read in a specific genre, the tougher I am on the rating. I also don’t like when I feel like I’m reading the same finale in a different series by the same author which happened in Sept. I also have months where ALL books were great, those are good months. I would probably read Wrecked 1st & then Furiously Happy on Audiobook to cheer me up after Wrecked πŸ˜‰ Jenny Lawson does an AMAZING job of narrating her own book that I’d recommend you listen to it.

  4. Good to hear everything worked out fine in the end for your little one! πŸ™‚ And I consider 5 books an achievement ;). So *claps excitedly*. I haven’t watched Gotham yet at ALL, but that’s is soooo cool that they’re shooting the series right around the corner!! See, that would never happen to me all the way over here in shitville πŸ˜₯

  5. Love your pictures! πŸ™‚ I’m posting my review of Labyrinth Lost tomorrow. We both loved that one. I’m looking forward to the next book. I feel like I read and reviewed it ages ago, but I had so many book reviews to post it’s crazy. Last month’s books are overflowing into my Spooktober posts. πŸ˜‚ I still need to write that post. This move has put me way behind on everything. It’s craziness. And we’re supposed to get that hurricane tomorrow. My dad said I brought the bad weather with me. Haha! I didn’t like the first season of Gotham much and still haven’t finished it. I’ve heard the second season is good. I saw the episodes with Cameron Monaghan, who I thought was Joker, and when they killed him off, I was like I’m over this show because where is my beloved Joker? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜© At times, I think I like him more than Batman. Give him to me! πŸ˜‚ I need my Joker!

    1. Thanks Jill!!!πŸ˜ŠπŸ’•can’t wait to read your Rave for Labyrinth Lost! After seeing the author in person & following her on social media, I’m even more excited to read the rest of the series. Hope the following books are released in the fall as well since they go with the season LOL. Moving is tough, I feel ya! I’ve had 2 big moves in my life & hated them both especially since one cut into a premiere of Dexter smh lol. I’ll never let that go πŸ™ˆ. That’s the guy from Shameless on Showtime which girl I LOVE!!! He’s supposed to come back this season, not dead πŸ˜‰at least I don’t think so lol, I read it somewhere. Season 1 sucked till about episode 7 or 8 when it felt like they did a complete 360. I loved season 2 & 3 started off strong with the evolution of Penguin & Riddler. I feel ya though, I luv JOKER! πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ™ŒπŸΌ

      1. I pushed my review to Sunday so I could post my Spooktober TBR tomorrow, but it’s definitely a Rave. πŸ™‚ Fall is perfect for witch books. I hope so too. Oh no! Your Dexter time was ruined. πŸ˜‚ That’s my show. πŸ™‚ What?!?! If Joker is coming back, then I’ll start watching from the beginning to get caught up. I need my Joker.

      2. Oh yay!!! I’ll be stopping by to read your Spooktober when I get in the office πŸ˜‰ I miss Dexter! There’s nothing in tv like that show & I hold on to hope that we get that rumored spin-off. Supposedly, Joker may return but he’s played by Jerome Valeska who is on the show Shameless. He was awesome as Joker on the last season so I’m hoping they do what they say & bring him backπŸ˜„

      3. I love my serial killer shows and Dexter was awesome! That ending though with Deb really killed me. πŸ˜‚ A spin-off with who? No way! I’m confused. The guy from Shameless is Cameron Monaghan. He has red hair and plays Ian Gallagher on the show. If it’s him, then I also hope they bring him back. πŸ™‚

      4. Lmfao!!! I was giving u his in screen persona’s name smhπŸ™ˆ lawd!!! Yes him, Cameron Monaghan. As for Dexter, I hated that ending. Him basically retiring as a lumberjack smh I’ve read that the producers aren’t opposed to the idea of a spin off. I’m thinking they have plenty to work with if they use his son as a storyline, think about it…they had the same beginnings. The whole kid in the middle of a puddle of blood scene comes to mindπŸ’

      5. Oh, right. Lol πŸ˜‚ Haha! I was so confused. It’s been ages since I saw those episodes. Yeah, and then his dark passenger all of a sudden stops when he decided to become a lumberjack? And Deb!!!! Oh right. Yeah, his son could totally work, and it’s not like they couldn’t bring him back.

  6. LOL! Deb crushed me! my favorite sailor mouth character on tv! I balled my eyes out that episode. The guy who plays Dexter was married to Deb in real life & divorced while on the show & had cancer…he went through a whole lot while on Dexter yet still killed his performance. Would love to see more from that world, here’s to hoping *fingers crossed*

  7. September was a good month quality wise even if you didn’t get as many books read as you would have liked! I am also guilty of putting off reading the last book in the series because I am not ready to let go. Good luck with Crooked Kingdom πŸ™‚ I am so happy that your daughter is doing so well with her transition into school! Good for her for being advanced!!!

Cheers to a great reading month in October!

  8. It seems like you had a great reading month for September. I’ve heard so many amazing things about Labyrinth Lost so I’ve definitely had to move it up my to-read list and now I can’t wait to get started on it! It’s the same story with Furiously Happy as well! Also I’m really glad you enjoyed Six of Crow, that is one of my all-tome favourite books and I am so so so excited to get started on Crooked Kingdom ASAP (I have a few books I need to read first but after that it’ll be all about Crooked Kingdom!) πŸ˜€

    1. Thanks Beth! I also have a few reads to get to before I can start Crooked Kingdom. Some galleys & Gemina of course. I’m going to be reading CK mid November & I couldn’t be more excited over getting back in that world 😍 I’ve been working on my NetGalley percentage in the meantime πŸ™ˆ LOL! Furiously Happy is my new happy book πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—

      2. It is a MUCH longer wait πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ but there are so many good titles this mth alone that they will serve as a distraction lol. Enjoy Crooked Kingdom! I’m looking forward to reading your thoughts πŸ˜ƒπŸ’•
