CURRENTLY READING

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

heartless-cover

Goodreads

Started Heartless yesterday as part of a buddy read with my book twin Gretchen @Chicnerdreads & enjoying it immensely! honestly Marrisa Meyer is the Queen of Fairy Tale re-tellings. You’re immediately thrust into the kingdom of Hearts & the Wonderland feel is ever present. I am very interested in Catherine’s aka The Queen Of Hearts story before she becomes who we all know & fear for her mood swings lol. I love that Catherine is a baker…I think I love any book in which there is baking especially when the author does a great job of making me want a pastry straight off the page.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

2213661

Goodreads

Also started this one yesterday in audiobook format BECAUSE it’s none other than uncle Gaiman come to tell a story & I can’t get enough of his narrating voice lol. After listening &  adoring the hell out of Stardust, I knew that I would be a fan of Gaiman for life. This is now my 2nd book & i’m only 12% in and i’m hooked. The Graveyard Book is rich with characters from page 1 and I find myself smiling like a little girl every time I listen to these characters (he even does the voices & does them WELL!) dialogue. I love little Nobody Owens & want to protect him for as long as possible…I have a feeling this will lead to me buying uncle Gaiman’s (not really my uncle lol) books for my shelves.

What did you recently finish reading?

Gemina by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Goodreads

I recently read & reviewed Gemina (review here) by Amie Kaufman & jay Kristoff, this was a 5 star read for me and an EPIC addition to the Illuminae files. Inside & out, this book was stunning!!! with illustrations by Marie Lu the author of The Young Elites trilogy to enhance the reading experience. Gemina offered up tons of laughs & a whole new set of characters to LOVE & care for.

The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer

amy-schumer

Goodreads

This was a 3.5 star read for me (review here), I listened to the audiobook & have a new found respect for Amy. Although the 1st half of this book was a bit hard to get into due to a bit of Amy’s own awkwardness & what comes off as dicomfort…the 2nd half really saw her coming into her own & owning her words. Schumer hits on some really tough subjects in this her collection of essays. Not every moment will be a laugh out loud moment but it will be raw & she makes no apologies for that, which is why I am now a fan 😉

What do you think you’ll read next?

Fractured by Catherine Mckenzie

29477965

Goodreads

Goodreads Synopsis:

Julie Prentice and her family move across the country to the idyllic Mount Adams district of Cincinnati, hoping to evade the stalker who’s been terrorizing them ever since the publication of her bestselling novel, The Murder Game. Since Julie doesn’t know anyone in her new town, when she meets her neighbor John Dunbar, their instant connection brings measured hope for a new beginning. But she never imagines that a simple, benign conversation with him could set her life spinning so far off course.

After a series of misunderstandings, Julie and her family become the target of increasingly unsettling harassment. Has Julie’s stalker found her, or are her neighbors out to get her, too? As tension in the neighborhood rises, new friends turn into enemies, and the results are deadly.

After seeing so many rave reviews from bloggers I follow, I requested and was approved for this eGalley on Netgalley. This author has been on my radar for another one of her books titled Smoke and if I enjoy Fractured, will be probably be boosting Smoke up the more immediate TBR list.

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

22299763

Goodreads

I will be buddy reading the 2nd book in the Six Of Crows duology with Jill @rantandraveaboutbooks, Melissa @Booknerdmomo, & Megan @Bookslayerreads starting November 17th. A bit bittersweet feeling since I am not ready to let go of this world & my babies! but it’s time, I can’t continue dodging Crooked Kingdom spoiler bombs on Twitter (quite stressful lol). Looking forward to jumping back into this world 😉

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

27833670

Goodreads

Goodreads Synopsis:

“Are you happy with your life?” Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious. Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits. Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable–something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

Another book that comes highly recommended by some pretty awesome book bloggers I follow & love. Also, while waiting in line to get my book signed by V.E. Schwab I over heard her say that she LOVED this book & that it was simply just SO GOOD! I mean, if that isn’t enough motivation to finally start this one I don’t know what is. Such an interesting premise, i’m looking forward to finding out what is happening to Jason.

Did any of you participate in WWW Wednesday? if so, drop that link & i’ll swing by your blog for a peek. October was a blur of activity & i’m hoping for a much more mellow November but who am I kidding? LOL!

  1. I love that you refer to him as Uncle Gaiman haha. And if it has his name slapped on it, I will pick it up. He is definitely great. I hope I can snag a copy of Heartless soon. I should just order, but with a birthday and holiday, oh and plane ticket this month haha, I am forced to behave. It sucks. Excited to see what you ladies think of it!

    1. Thank you Danielle 🙂 HAHA! I wish he WAS my uncle, I’d be calling him over for story time ALL the time smh. I don’t think this man can do any wrong at this point LMAO! I’m currently listening to it at work & I had to stop because I found myself getting to comfy in my cubicle lol. I’m excited to get a hardcover copy hopefully in this month’s Owlcrate, my arc isn’t faring to well no matter how much TLC I’m trying to give it. Paperbacks just don’t do well in my bag at all. OoOo Hold out for the birthday I say! I love books for my birthday! no one ever believes me when I say that though…

      1. Why is it that no one ever understand we just want books haha. My nonhusband has finally got it dialed. He doesn’t even shop for me. On my birthday he takes my to Barnes & Noble and and the Teavana and lets me come home and curl up for the weekend ❤

  2. I’m (still) almost done with The Graveyard Book and I just love how he brings the characters to life! He obviously has a very masculine voice, but I’m still convinced when he’s doing the female voices somehow!

    1. Lmao OMG! Yes! My thoughts exactly 😂😂😂 Don’t ask me why I lUv Caius Pompeus (butchered his name) lol, so many interesting characters. I’m trying to slow down on listening cuz I don’t want it to end too soon. Not sure which Gaiman to go with next though, suggestions?

      1. Ahahaha, he is fabulous indeed!! All the characters are so well crafted. LOL, same here, I keep pressing pause because I’m afraid I’ll go through it too fast. Which is why it’s taking me forever to read it, lol. Weeeeeell, I’d definitely say The Ocean At The End of The Lane because https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1649085-anyone-think-there-is-a-tie-in-here-with-the-graveyard-book. Coraline is also on my top list to listen to!

      2. Lol smh I’m already on the same path, purposely pausing and listening every 30 minutes or so 🙈 Oh YIPPEE! I already own the audiobook for The Ocean At The End Of The Lane 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 thank you 😊💕

      3. Hahaha, let’s see how long we can draw it out :’). I bet the last 30 minutes will be 300 instead. Or pff, who am I kidding, the last 30 minutes are 1-go material :’). W00t!! 😀 ❤

      4. D’AWWE!! I bet this is all a conspiracy about letting me finish it first :’) :’). (on a serious note, that sucks, I hope you’ve brought some normal books with you for the train ride 😉 )

  3. Ohh I can’t wait to see what you think of Heartless, that’s going to be my next read once I finish Replica so hopefully I’ll be able to get started on it by the end of this week. I’ve been waiting so long for this book I can’t wait to get around to it finally!
Also I really hope you enjoy Crooked Kingdom, I can’t wait to see what you think of that one either. You’ve done really well avoiding spoilers so far, especially on Twitter. I think you’ll really love it, it’s an amazing book! 😀

    1. I’m really hoping I enjoy Crooked Kingdom 😃 Heartless has been AMAZING so far, hope you enjoy it as much as I am 💕 how is Replica going for you? & how are you reading it? Simultaneous chapters or did you choose one to start with? 🤔💭

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I hope so. I’m starting it tomorrow and I am so excited because I’ve wanted to get my hands on this book for ages now! 🙂
I just finished Replica and I really liked it. It had some tough competition following Crooked Kingdom and Blood for Blood but it’s an interesting story. Nah I read Lyra’s story first and then Gemma’s, couldn’t really be bothered to flip the book around to do simultaneous chapters.

  4. Have fun reading Crooked Kingdom! I will let you know how much I love Six of Crows when I get to it, hopefully this month.
Also, Dark Matter sounds soo freaking good. I have never read a book that explores the multiverse theory. But I basically believe in the multiverse, so I have to read this!

    1. Thank you! Six Of Crows should be used as an example for other authors who can’t seem to fathom the idea of including POC in fantasy YA…jussayin lol. Yes for Dark Matter! I found that synopsis fascinating, I’ve never read anything on the multiverse theory either. Whelp let ya know how it goes 😉

  5. Awesome picks! I haven’t read Illuminae yet so I’m keeping your review of Gemina for after I finally get around to reading those books! I’m so intimidated by Gaiman that I am afraid to buy his books, haha! I’m sure I’ll end up on the less popular side of the opinion again! I can’t wait to hear what you think of Fractured, it’s the controversial book Annie was talking about if I remember well. Dark Matter is at the top of my wishlist, I mean, all those good reviews? I’m curious!! Happy reading 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. No worries lol, I do the same with reviews for books that I know I’m going to want to read 😉 Gaiman can Donna wrong Donna! Haha! No but seriously, he really is like one of those story tellers you see in kids movies, makes you wanna get all cozy just to listen to him lol. I’d go with the audiobooks just because it’s a great experience listening to his narration. I’ve heard that Fractured has stirred the pot a bit but I haven’t dug any deeper cuz I wanted to see for myself. Anne reviewed it?!? 🤔💭*mental note* I’m going to have to check her out once I finish it. Dark Matter has been quite the buzzy book so I’m excited to find out what it’s all about. Happy reading 😊💕

  6. Glad to hear you’re enjoying Heartless! I can’t wait to read it. I love Alice in Wonderland and Alice retellings. I wasn’t a huge fan of The Lunar Chronicles, but I am hoping I love Heartless. Dark Matter is so amazing!!

    1. Thank you, so am I! I also have Furthermore to read a bit later & I hear that’s a Wonderland re-telling. I enjoyed books 1, 3, & 4 in The Lunar Chronicles lol, book 2 was not a fave. I’m loving hearing all the rave reviews for Dark Matter, it just boosts my hype level lmao! 💕

  7. Funny that you have Dark Matter because I was planning on adding that to my little TBR but not fully sure. We are both loving Heartless so yay to that!!!!!! I hope you enjoy The Graveyard book and have fun with your other buddy read =D

    1. I really think we are on the same wave length LOL! Ugh! Heartless has to be THE perfect Winter read, giving me all the feels 🙂 I am 35% into The Graveyard Book & OMG LOVING IT! 2nd Gaiman favorite. I just hope I enjoy Crooked Kingdom but your reaction afterwards worries me lol.

  8. I can’t wait for you and Gretchen’s reviews of Heartless! I’m so excited for that book. And our buddy read! I’m dying to read Crooked Kingdom and like you can’t keep avoiding spoilers 😂. Only two more weeks! *counts down the days* 🙈

  9. Uncle Gaiman!!! Yes!!! I will probably never actually read the print version of any of his books unless maybe it’s a re-read. I mean why wouldn’t you listen to them via audiobook?!? I’m trying to decided my next NG audiobook… I’m thinking The Ocean at the End of the Lane?
Anyways! Lots of good books coming up! I can’t wait to see what you think of Dark Matter. I’ve seen so many good things about it! Now that I know it had Schwab’S stamp of approval I must read it 😊

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Haha! Glad you approve ☺️ I do t see myself reading any of his books in physical format either. The audiobook book experience is just too good & lush. Master storyteller/narrator that Uncle Gaiman 😃💕
Anne from Inkedbrownies recommended The Ocean at the End of the Lane & when I first discovered Gaiman, I went a bit crazy in Audible so I already own it lol. Dark Matter has so many rave reviews, really looking forward to seeing what the buzz is about 😊💕

  10. Dark Matter is awesome! I gave it to my mom and she liked it but she didn’t understand the science even after I explained it. I hope you love it as much as I did. I thought it was brilliant. I’m such a science nerd. 🙂 Thanks for the shout out, girl! I’m so pumped for our buddy read. I’ve been way absent this week with job interviews and writing assignments from hell. I’m so looking forward to chilling out that week and reading this with you guys. I’m hoping Heartless is coming in my OwlCrate box because that one has my name all over it. 🙂 I’ve heard good things about The Graveyard Book. I still haven’t read a Gaiman book yet. 🙈

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’ve heard that it’s science heavy & find that to be even more interesting. Some people struggled with The Martian because of all the scientific jargon as well. I’ve never read anything on The multiverse theory so we’ll see how it goes. I’m being careful not to start anything too close to our CK date, my schedule has been insane these past 2 weeks. I think it’s a safe bet that we’ll be seeing Heartless & it’s Owlcrate exclusive cover, in the November box 😉 Gaiman is seriously not to be missed BUT I’m partial to the audiobooks since he narrates them himself & is a master storyteller 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

      Liked by 1 person

      1. You’re not doing well with OwlCrate lately, huh? You’ll have dups of that one, too. 😂 Did you cancel ahead of time? That’s interesting. I’ve never heard of the authors doing the narration. I want to buy one just to see what that’s like. 🙂
